BBC news: Locust invasion: UN warning for Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea and Sudan

Desert locusts have devoured crops and pasture across a swathe of land covering parts of the Tigray, Amhara, Oromia and Somali regional states. The FAO estimated that the insects were eating 1.8 million tonnes of vegetation a day across 350 sq km (135 sq miles) of the country. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in its citation. Ethiopian PM emerging as early Nobel Peace Prize favorite

CGTN Africa says “One of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s biggest victories was the peace deal he brokered with neighbor Eritrea. The deal, signed in July last year, ended a nearly 20-year military stalemate with Eritrea following their 1998-2000 border war”. Asle Sveen, a historian who has written several books about the Nobel Peace Prize, told Reuters the deal made Abiy exactly the kind of candidate Alfred Nobel had envisaged for the prize. Read more
